Presentado por primera vez en 2006 como un portátil de 13 pulgadas de policarbonato blanco o negro para usuarios de nivel básico, este diseño inicial de MacBook fue reemplazado en 2008 por una opción de aluminio que redujo las ventas del MacBook Air, más caro.
Apple recuperó el diseño anterior de policarbonato, lo modificó en modelos posteriores para asemejarlo al elegante estilo "Unibody" de los portátiles Apple más caros, pero con una carcasa de policarbonato más económica, y finalmente descontinuó la línea en 2012.
